A forest of black trunks, the Blackwood, lies on the road to the capital. Ser Garrick, illegitimate and landless, gets one week to claim the crown, and seven lords must kneel before he can. Two already have; five still mock him. A witch steps from the trees, calls him by name and says she can deliver the rest. The queen regent backs a rival. Garrick wants the throne by his own sword; the witch wants him.
