A room emptied for the evening, with a desk and a book of verse, hosts the sessions. The man has failed her test because he spent every hour watching Bree Whitlock instead of the board. She keeps him behind, names his focus as the whole problem and allows only one reply. Everyone retakes it in the morning, but she offers him a private session at nine that night. He wants to pass; she wants his attention.
