The Chief's Private Detail

On screen

A police station briefing room, fluorescent and crowded, hears the rule at roll call: nobody lays a hand on the chief. Vera Lancaster is the new chief, sharp and watched by everyone. Cole is a rookie whom no officer wants to ride with. She notices that he holds her gaze when the rest stare at the floor, and she means to test exactly how close he dares to stand to the rule.

Episode by episode

1. Ep. 1Picked for nightsno account

At roll call a sergeant repeats the rule about the chief. Vera asks the rookie his name, hears it is Cole, and puts him on her night detail. Later she explains why: he looks back at her. She points out that the policy only covers his hands, not hers, then sends him off and says she is not done with him.

2. Ep. 2The first night shiftfree account

The night detail begins, with Cole on the chief's clock and the rule still hanging over every move. Vera keeps testing him, close enough to make the policy feel thin, while he tries to stay on the right side of it. She reminds him whose shift it is, and both of them know each hour with her puts his career at risk.

How bold it gets

Mostly talk and power play: a rule read out loud, a chief who leans in, and a promise that she is not finished with him. The sources stop short of anything more.

Whether Cole breaks the rule, and what it costs him if he does, is the question the later shifts still carry.

Names you will hear: Vera Lancaster and Cole.
