On screen

A torch-lit castle on the day of a royal wedding. The aging king has just wed a bride no older than his son, and before the whole court he makes the heir kneel and kiss the new queen's hand. The courtiers laugh. After the feast the king passes out drunk, and the queen walks into the son's wing alone. Under her gown waits a snake mark, the sign of the house his father has fought for ten years.

Episode by episode

Ep. 1Kneeling in courtno account
The throne room comes first: the king makes his son kneel to his new mother, and the court laughs. That night she appears in his chambers, saying the king is asleep and her maids oil her every night; tonight it will be him. As the dress loosens he finds the enemy mark, and she dares him to tell or keep going.
Ep. 2Riders on the north roadfree account
At a feast the court toasts the queen. Later the heir admits he waited an hour outside the royal bedchamber and kept silent. She tells him that makes him a traitor anyway and lists her titles, ending with House Vale. An army led by her brother is two days away, she says, and she plans to throw the gate wide. Riders appear early.
