A family house set for a birthday, with a cake waiting for its candles and a single bathroom on the upstairs hall. Alma has just turned 21, and she greets her visiting stepbrother by remarking how big he has gotten. The parents assign the two of them that shared bathroom and order the doors kept closed. Alma keeps making jokes that her father takes one way and her stepbrother takes another. She has also written a list.

   At home the parents announce the shared bathroom and remind everyone to keep doors closed. Alma slips a crude joke past her father, who corrects her to spreading her wings. She asks for help with her candles, then corners her stepbrother while the parents are in the house. At bedtime she tells him she made a birthday list and he is number one.

   Later that night, with Dad still awake, Alma comes to her stepbrother's door. He reminds her she is his stepsister; she answers that it is just two words. He says she was looking at him during the joke at dinner, and she admits she was not sorry. She turns her back so he can work the zipper of her dress, and his resistance runs out.
